The Baker's Dozen
Published in School & Library Binding by Atheneum (October, 1995)
Authors: Wendy Edelson and Aaron Shepard

Wonderful childs book!
I gave this book to a 6 year old daughter of a close friend four years ago, and it became her favorite book for months. It still comes out on Christmas four years later.

I recommend it to any parent - especially if they live in the Albany, NY area.

Teaches The Real Meaning of Christmas
This is a gorgeously illustrated book that teaches a wonderful lesson about the spirit of generosity. Who can condemn the baker who is perfectly fair? St. Nicholas, cloaked as an old woman -- who shows him that by giving more of his own possessions, he will in turn receive greater rewards. This is a great way to teach young children about the the joy of giving, and about the life of St. Nicholas. The "truth" about Santa is that there WAS a saint who gave to the poor, filled stockings and dropped gold coins down chimneys at night -- this book could launch older kids on a study of the real saint's life and how Santa traditions arose. My six year old boys aren't ready for that part yet, but they love the story of the baker, and this year we're going to try to bake gingerbread cookies to resemble the baker's St. Nicholas cookies on St. Nicholas Day. (Some clever marketer ought to package this book with a cookie cutter and recipe, because the cookies are beautiful!)

Baker's Dozen Doubled

Good, but not complete
The quilts in this book are lovely, and the book is written in Mary Ellen Hopkins folksy, humorous style. The instructions are easy to understand. I made two quilts using the designs in this book and they turned out well. My only problem with this book is that she often refers back to "The It's Okay If You Sit on My Quilt Book," which I ended up buying.

Keeps It Simple with your personal seam allowances
#2 in her wonderful series. A must have for all quilting libraries and for those who have a tough time getting that "perfect 1/4 inch" seam allowance. How to design spectacular quilts with simple pieces. What a master at creating the unusual. This book focuses on your personal seam allowance and allows even the most inexperienced quilter to make marvelously pieced quilts.

Barney's Book of Trains (Barney's Transportation Series)
Published in Paperback by Lyrick (June, 1998)
Authors: Linda Cress Dowdy, Monica Mody, and Darrell Baker
Average review score:

Very Good.
This is a very nice book. Both my daughter and son liked it even though my daughter likes other things. Well worth the money.

A fun and educational book
This book included two of my sons favorites - Barney and trains. He loves to read about Barney and BJ looking at and riding on all different types of trains. He especially enjoys naming the 19 trains at the end of the book. What a great way to review what we read. I am buying this book for other kids who love Barney and trains.

Beginners Bible Tales of Virtue
Published in Hardcover by Random House (Merchandising) (March, 1995)
Authors: Carolyn Baker, Lisa Reed, and Kelly Pulley
Average review score:

Early Reader Graduation Gift
This collection of stories from "The Beginners Bible" is great gift to give to your graduating kindergarten - first grader. A way to start daily devotions read by the child. With stories already known by the student, written using age appropriate words, will give the reader that needed confidence to succceed. Along with bibical subjects of forgiveness, obedience, patience, honesty, and others will give the parent a chance to listen to the child and discuss the story just read. This small gift will lead the growing child of Christ to share with parents and friend how the power of God works through ones life. A gift of God that no church should be without.

I HAVE 2 WISHES ABOUT THIS BOOK:
1) That every child in the world had a copy of this book; 2) And that each child's parent would read it to him/her nightly and take it to heart as well! (Then the world could be a better place filled with the following contents/virtues if those 2 wishes came true!)

Here are the tales of virtue: Forgiveness (Joseph), Loyalty (Ruth and Naomi), Responsibility (Adam and Eve), Friendship (David and Johnathan), Courage (Ester), Obedience (Jonah), Sharing (Elijah), Patience (Hannah), Work (Noah), and Honesty (Daniel).

"Each tale first defines a virtue in a way your child can understand. Then, we show how a biblical character from a classic story portrays that virtue to his or her own life." [unknown commentator in table of contents.]

Knowledge without application is useless; that's is why this book is so great! I highly recommend it for ALL AGES!

Remember Jesus said: "Assuredly, I say unto you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven." Matthew 18:3 THE HOLY BIBLE.

The Book of Priestcraft: Credits (Accessory)
Published in Paperback by TSR Hobbies (July, 1998)
Authors: Richard Baker, Dale Donovan, Duane Maxwell, Ed Stark, Anne Brown, and TSR Inc
Average review score:

Interesting
Hmm, I never realized that TSR killed off this line of acessories. As far as I know, it is no more than two years old, and it's still fully viable on the webs ( heck, even Amazon carries a large selection of all things Birthright!). Nevertheless, Birthright is a unique setting, and it can be easily enjoyed. This book is a very good work on the nature of priestcraft in the world where this campaign is set ( and if it IS killed off, I advise you to get it quickly - out of print products don't linger too long on this site). It is also a very good work of AD&D priestcraft in general, and although it isn't as likely to help players as it will help DMs, but take my word - this book will ease the life of DMs immensely (remember that player whose priest would constantly stop to cast healing spells on everyone? Well, this book will stop that overconfident character dead in his tracks...)

Grab this before it's gone!!!
TSR's only misstep since its revitalization is cancellation of the Birthright line. This book details the religions and priests of Cerilia, and is a very good supplement. Why more people didn't get into Birthright and keep the line alive is a mystery to me.

Breadtime: A Down-To-Earth Cookbook for Bakers and Bread Lovers
Published in Paperback by Ten Speed Press (August, 1998)
Author: Susan Jane Cheney
Average review score:

Handmade Breadmaker's Heaven
I found this book very useful, even though I am a confirmed bread machine user and this book is intended for handmade bread makers. The chapter on grains is an indispensable guide for any cook, as it covers storage, selection and cooking grains; as well as a description of eleven different types of grain, from the various wheats to kamut, rye and more. You will also find information on leavening agents, sweeteners and tools. The 250+ recipes cover quick breads, sourdough, yeasted, flat and natural rise breads; and includes spreads, sauces and sandwiches. The chapter on sourdoughs gave me the knowledge and confidence to begin making a sourdough myself (it makes a delicious and aromatic bread). My favorite recipes to be found in this book are "Mellow Muffins", "Got the Blues Muffins", "Fruit Sauce Raisin Bread" "Sourdough Grits Bread" and "Sprouted Wheat Bread".

Even Better Than the Original!
Susan Cheney's original edition of Breadtime Stories was a wonderfully complete guide to breads and things that go with them, but this extensively revised edition is, in many ways, even better than the original. It is attractively designed, full of technical information about grains and the baking process, chock full of wonderful recipes, and a pleasure to read and use.

Those familiar with the original edition will find lots of new recipes, including a really unique and helpful section on whole grain baking for bread machines. To make room for the new bread recipes, some of the original material has been dropped, but this is still a great book with hundreds of great recipes.

Cheney doesn't make a big deal about it, but this is a vegetarian cookbook that vegans will find especially appealing. Her scone recipes put commercially available scones to shame, despite her use of healthy alternatives to dairy products. The subtitle -- A Down to Earth Cookbook -- aptly describes her successful effort to present bread as a foundation for complete meals. You'll find recipes for pizzas, calzones, wraps, spreads, fillings and a variety of other vegetarian foods you won't find anywhere else.

Cheney's personal and engaging writing "voice" really brings this book to life. Experienced bakers and beginners will find it to be an equally appealing addition to their collections

Christian Cyberspace Companion: A Guide to the Internet and Christian Online Resources
Published in Paperback by Baker Book House (February, 1997)
Author: Jason D. Baker
Average review score:

A great book for Christians learning about the Internet.
The thing that impressed me about this book was the fact that the author does not talk over your head. He starts off giving a brief history of the Internet. Then explains the differance between on-line services and internet service providers. It is quite basic but some parts get fairly in depth. Besides that, it answers questions that Christians are asking today like, "Should my kids be on the Internet?" He discusses things from pornography to morality. One more good thing......he concludes with many pages full of recommended Christian websites. This came in very handy and I'm sure it will continue to. Overall, I think this book is an excellent choice for Christians to read if they are thinking about getting on the net or even if they already do

EXCELLENT EXPLANATION OF INTERNET & ALL ITS ASPECTS
Best review of basic Internet technology I've found in simple English (non-technical) for neophytes, plus an index of all the Christ-related Web-sites known to exist at publication time, along with a minute explanation of each. First edition was up-to-date at the time of its 1995 publication time, and the 2nd edition in early 1997 is still amazingly current (dropping lots of out-of-date listings to add new ones), but will probably require annual revisions to keep current, due to the amazing recent Internet growth!

Combat Fleets of the World 2000-2001: Their Ships, Aircraft, and Systems
Published in Hardcover by Naval Institute Press (05 May, 2000)
Authors: A. D. Baker and United States Naval Institute
Average review score:

Review For 2000-2001 Combat Fleets of The World
In general, it is a good book. It is a cheaper alternative to Jane's Fighting Ships, a good guide for warships but at $530 a copy very expensive. In addition to being a catalog of warships for each of the navies of the world, this book also talks about in depth about the weapons, electronic systems, and aircrafts that each of the world's navies uses. This is also an advantage that this book has over Jane's Fighting Ships since Jane's mostly focus on the warships and briefly on the weapons, electronic systems, and aircrafts for the world's navies.

However, there is no color photographs in this book, only black and white photographs. Some of the description of the warships are a little too brief; some don't even have a schematic for them.

Overall, I would recommend this book with the above mentioned reservation.

Excellent
Very comprehensive, though some of the descriptions are quite short; the major ships are covered well but some of the smaller ones are not, although it is likely that that information is not available. Overall, a recommended purchase if you are interested in this field, though I would purchase the newer version.

Craft an Elegant Wedding (Creative Machine Arts)
Published in Paperback by Chilton/Haynes (February, 1995)
Authors: Naomi Baker and Tammy Young
Average review score:

A little bit of everything for a great price.
Need something that touches on a little of everything you need to know to plan a wedding? Try this book. It gives you a timeline of how far ahead you should plan, a very useful template for planning your budget, planning what style wedding to have, and even what styles of wedding gowns are best for different body types. While this book doesn't have ALL the information you need, it certainly is a great planning book, including crafts for those who want to make items for their (or someone elses!) wedding.

For the price, I think it's a great book to help you keep track of what things you need to get done, without pulling out your hair

The best book for making all your accessories!
I found this book in the library and checked it out continuously. Here are instructions for making all those high-priced accesories, like the frilly stuff for toasting glasses and cake knife sets. I got all that for a lot less than buying a set and it looked so much better. You can buy the toasting glasses and cake knife and server individually (and cheaper) and then decorate them yourself. Ring pillows, purses, garter, whatever you like. It's all here in this book.

The Delaney Woman
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Harlequin (June, 2003)
Author: Jeanette Baker
Average review score:

exciting romantic suspense
Kellie Delaney loves her widowed brother and treats his son as if she gave birth to the lad. The two male Delaneys are everything to Kellie until the police inform her that her two beloved relatives died in a car crash in Wales. Wrecking her already shattered psyche, she learns the collision was deliberate to eliminate Connor, who worked undercover.

Kellie obsesses over learning why her brother was marked for death. She learns of a Tom Whelan of Ireland though she cannot see his connection to her sibling, but assumes he is probably the killer. When Kellie meets Tom, she realizes he is not what she expected as he is a caring person that she is half in love with even though he is married. When his wife leaves prison, Tom's IRA past surfaces placing Kellie, the woman he now loves, in peril, especially since she hides her agenda from everyone.

THE DELANEY WOMAN is an exciting romantic suspense tale that includes a powerful cast especially the grieving heroine who readers will empathize with and understand her motives. Though issue resolution is a bit too simplistic, the story line moves rapidly forward yet contains depth so that the reader comprehends the complexities and contrasts of opinions. Secondary characters strengthen the plot so the appreciative audience receives a fine thriller.

Harriet Klausner

Characters I came to care for
Kellie Delaney adored her widowed brother and his son; they were the most important parts of her world. That all changes is a moment when the police come to her door to announce their deaths in a tragic car wreck, one that was not an accident.

Kellie can not seem to get her life back on track after this, not until she knows why her family was destroyed. Her quest for the truth gives her a name to go on, Tom Whelan. She sets out to meet him and find out his connection to her brother. Instead of the killer she was expecting to find, she finds a man she can love. However, Tom is still married, though the marriage is essentially over, with his wife in prison and someone he no longer loves. Tom also has a troubled past with the IRA, and that part of his life is about to cause problems, as is his wife's return, and Kellie's own secret. Her deception puts lives at risk, and could destroy her future.

***** THE DELANEY WOMAN was one I expected to be a gentle meandering trip through Ireland. Instead, I got a thrilling mystery with warm moments and a to die for, mature hero with a heroine I could sympathize with easily. You can feel Kellie's pain if you have ever loved and lost. Tom's daughter is a charmer as well, but not a kid that overwhelms the plot. I am hoping for a sequel; there are characters worthy of exploration left with their stories untold. *****
